Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation

calripken.gif

Using the baseball and softball field to help teach life’s critical lessons, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation is working with young people residing in disadvantaged communities throughout America. Our goal is to teach youth the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle, and making smart and productive decisions in their lives. We want them to learn that embracing lifelong character traits such as perseverance, commitment, developing good nutritional habits, and giving back to their communities, will expose them to opportunities and experiences that will help them become successful and contributing adults. The ball field is simply the vehicle we use to get their attention, open their eyes to their own potential, and teach them that success is within their grasp.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation

elizabeth_glaser.gif

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation was born from a mother’s love for her children. Elizabeth Glaser contracted the AIDS virus through a blood transfusion in 1981 when giving birth to her daughter, Ariel. Elizabeth and her husband, Paul Glaser, later learned that she had unknowingly passed the virus to Ariel and then to their son, Jacob. Following Ariel’s death in 1988, Elizabeth joined with close friends Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis to create a foundation with a simple but critical mission: to bring hope to all children with AIDS.

Although Elizabeth lost her own battle with AIDS, her life is a testament to the power that all mothers have to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of their children. Elizabeth’s legacy also lives on in her son, Jacob, who is a healthy young adult. Thanks to the Foundation’s commitment to research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment programs, the lives of many other children around the world have been saved as well.

Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation

jumpstart.gif

The Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation® is the first and only resource nationally to provide memory opportunities for children who have a Mom or Dad with late-stage, limited life cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates 571,000 Americans died of cancer this past year. Many were parents leaving behind grieving children. “Treating families to WOW! Experiences®, giving children, who will lose their Mom or Dad to cancer, a timeout to create indispensable memories together…while they can” is our mission and purpose. A WOW! is a unique, memorable experience that allows the family to enjoy time with each other away from their new normal of living with cancer. WOW! Experiences® include: concerts, resort stays, The Grammys, The Oscars, American Idol, The X-Games; professional and college sports, Broadway shows, cruises; theme parks and attractions; and even private tours of the White House. These children and these families (together) deserve to call timeout from the throes, hardship and miserable anticipation of losing their Mom or Dad. Most of the Dads and Moms The Foundation "treats" die within 2-5 months after they go on their WOW! Experience®. This is meaningful, tangible and indispensable. Your support will give these families a cherished timeout...together….while they can. What a gift. Indispensable is an appropriate word. "Memories become our greatest inheritance"®

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International

jdrf.gif

JDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In FY2008 the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants and fellowships in 22 countries.

National Federation of the Blind

blindfederation.gif

With more than 50,000 members nationwide, the National Federation of the Blind serves as the voice of the nation’s blind. We are blind people working together in local chapters, state organizations, and at our headquarters, the National Center for the Blind, to create a bright tomorrow for ourselves, for blind children, and for those who will come after us. We believe that our blindness does not need to stop us from living full and productive lives but that misunderstanding about blindness and lack of opportunity often prevent us from doing so.

We help parents of blind children, give scholarships to blind students, conduct a service which allows blind people to read newspapers over the telephone free of charge, operate the International Braille and Technology Center for the Blind, work to expand employment opportunities, and help blind senior citizens learn necessary skills to continue living independent lives. We seek out and welcome with gratitude assistance from sighted members of the general public who wish to join with us in our work.

Peace First

peacefirst_logo.gif

Peace First (formerly Peace Games), which began as a response to the sky-rocketing youth homicide rates in the early 1990s, works in partnership with schools to build safe, effective school climates where children learn how to be engaged and active citizens. The heart of this program is a Pre-K-8 service-learning curriculum integrated weekly into the academic frameworks of the school, taught by young adult volunteers in partnership with the classroom teacher. This work is supported by intense coaching with principals and lead teachers to deepen their efficacies at supporting academically and emotionally successful young people.

Peace First exists to teach students to become problem-solvers with the ability, and the inclination, to create social change. We work with schools to empower students with the skills, relationships, and opportunities to be engaged, positive forces in their communities and throughout their lives. We show them they have the power, creativity, and responsibility to create peace.

Peace First operates in Boston, Los Angeles, and New York; Tickets for Charity donations will help us grow our work in these regions.

Red Sox Foundation

redsoxfoundation.gif

The Red Sox Foundation is committed to using the power of the Red Sox and the passion of their fans to support programs serving children throughout New England and Red Sox Nation.

There are four cornerstones of the Red Sox Foundation. The first is the Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, which provides inspiring breakthroughs in the battles against children’s cancer. The second is the Teen Center Dimock Health and Community Center, a program that opens doors of opportunity to children in some of Boston's poorest neighborhoods through tutoring, anti-drug and violence prevention programs, counseling, job training, and recreational activities. Dimock’s teen center is an island of security for kids in the inner city.

The Red Sox Foundation also funds The Red Sox Scholars program, which each year provides 25 college scholarships of $5,000 each plus accrued interest and mentoring to financially challenged, academically talented sixth graders. And the fourth cornerstone of the Red Sox Foundation is children's athletic programs including youth baseball and Children's Retreats at the Ron Burton Training Village in central Massachusetts, where children learn life skills and improve their self esteem.

The Red Sox Foundation also focuses on children who live in New England’s group homes, or what were once known as orphanages. The largest team charity in Major League Baseball, the Red Sox Foundation also supports many other children's charities throughout New England.

This unique program is designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal free and reduced meal program and may not have any or enough food on the weekends. Better test scores, improves reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.

$80 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. Following a donation, a school is chosen and a local grocer partners with the program to provide food for meals in the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn.

Clearwater (supported by Pete Seeger)

Clearwater

Mission: Creating the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders.

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit, member-supported corporation whose mission is to preserve and protect the Hudson River. In 1966, folk music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, announced plans to “build a boat to save the river”. At the time, the Hudson was rank with raw sewage, toxic chemicals and oil pollution; fish had disappeared over many miles of its length. Seeger believed a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river, where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it. Inspired by that vision, the 106-feet-long tall ship Clearwater was built and launched in 1969. The sloop was among the first vessels in the U.S. to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, virtually creating the template by which such programs are conducted around the world today.

Since the launch of the Clearwater, more than 430,000 young people and hundreds of thousands of adults have experienced their first real look at an estuary’s ecosystem—fish, invertebrates, water chemistry and ecological principals—aboard the sloop. Clearwater’s environmental education programs now serve more than 15,000 students annually, and the organization also educates over 200 teachers each year through SUNY New Paltz, Pace University and other institutions. Clearwater’s members have helped advocate for the Clean Water Act, the Hudson River Park Act and removal of PCB’s from the Hudson.

Year Up

YEARUP

Year Up’s mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.

We achieve this through a high-support, high expectation model that combines marketable job skills, stipends, corporate apprenticeships, college credit, a behavior management system and comprehensive support to place these young adults on a viable path to economic self-sufficiency. Our intensive training and education program annually serves 650 urban young adults, ages 18-24, at our sites in Boston, New York City, Providence, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Founded in 2000, Year Up believes that a well-designed training, education and support program can make an incredible difference in young people's lives. Our innovative approach takes four program elements – education, experience, support and guidance – and combines them into a system that emphasizes high expectations for quality work and professional behavior. A strong support structure guides students as they take the needed steps to succeed in careers and post-secondary education.
